July 18, 2000. A question by e-mail:

Hi! My name is Cathy and I am interested in finding out more about the non-invasive glucose monitor, which is in the form of a wristwatch. I know that last year they were doing research in California on these and that they were infrared monitors.
(I think).

The research showed that the results were about 20 minutes behind the actual blood glucose but as it was a continuous monitor it would be useful to see what was happening and whether the blood sugar was going up or down. I feel this would be especially useful to me as I am pregnant and have to keep the glucose between 4-7 mmol/litre. This is an impossibility but I am working hard at it. Do you have any more details as to where I might obtain something like this?

Thank you for your help.

Cathy Waters

Scott's reply: Yes indeed, the continuous monitor could be very helpful for you. I would
suggest that you start at the Cygnus web site:

The FDA ruled the device "approvable" in May, so it could be on the market soon in the U.S. I don't know who markets it in the UK -- you should e-mail them.
